Gandhi and Kasturba during the Salt Satyagraha, 1930. Gandhi initially led the Salt March with 78 male coresidents from Sabarmati Ashram. He then asked women to join the civil disobedience campaign by organizing boycotts of foreign cloth and liquor. Kasturba was not among the initial 78 marchers, but joined Gandhi along the route, and played a leading role in the protest at the Dharasana Salt Works.
