and about <time>10 o’clock</time> I received an order to be at <placeName type="city" cert="high" key="New Berne" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl059">New Bern<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName> at 12 o’clock to sit on a board of survey of foreign stores. I got a dug-out of <persName key="Grossonfer" type="soldier">Grossonfer</persName> & took two of my men to row, - the <objectName type="equipment">oars</objectName> light & the <objectName type="equipment">blocks</objectName> broken off - waves running high, and <name type="weather">wind</name> blowing strong southwest - we had a hard time getting down half of the way, we ran to shore and poled. <persName key="Lt Wright" type="Lieutenant">Lt Wright</persName> & <persName key="Goodridge" type="private">Goodridge</persName> <orgName type="military">57 N.Y.</orgName> were the other two. The latter was away North. We looked at the <objectName type="food">rotten hay</objectName> & <objectName type="food">oats</objectName> and adjutants today. <persName key="Lt Morris" type="Lieutenant ">Lt. Morris</persName> was substituted. The <objectName type="vehicle">schooner</objectName> had been chartered by the gov. of Dibble at <placeName type="city" key="New York" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl061">New York </placeName> - he slipped in private stores, & 40 bales of <objectName type="food">hay</objectName> were left on deck. She sprung a leak off <placeName type="city" cert="medium" key="Cape Hatteras" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnp0l13">Hatteras<precision match="@ref" precision="medium"/></placeName> & was near sinking - both <objectName type="food">hay</objectName> inside & outside was damaged. We reported; however, that Dibble who had put the store in & smuggled them into a port not open ought to be held liable at least for the 40 bales outside - for though they would have been damaged even if put in there, he ought to have put them inside & it was a question whether by displacing the forage with other <objectName type="equipment">smuggled goods</objectName> would not make him liable for the whole. He is such a mean old curse, he ought to be caught up. It <name type="weather">rained</name> this evening and I had to walk up. This morning as we were going down the guards of the <orgName type="military">H com.</orgName> discharged their pieces, & the minces with an angry [hing] came into the water all around us. Worse scared than in battle, & we have then many a hearty imprecation. <persName key="Dick" type="private">Dick</persName> was so scared he was going to jump into the <name type="theCreek">Creek</name>.
