            <head><date>Friday 18th</date></head>
            <p><name type="weather">This was a bright fine day.</name> <persPronouns>We</persPronouns>
               ran up toward the head of the <placeName>Island</placeName> and got aground. We were better off on the
               <placeName subtype="boat">Ocean Wave</placeName> and with the assistance of the tug <placeName subtype="boat">Champion,</placeName> <placeName subtype="boat">The Guide</placeName> got through
               and anchored above the <placeName>light house</placeName>. <placeName subtype="boat">The Northerner</placeName> came up with the 21st Mass
               and anchored near us. About 3 o’clock the <placeName subtype="boat">Picket</placeName>, <placeName subtype="boat">Phoenix</placeName>, <placeName subtype="boat">Massasoit</placeName>, <placeName subtype="boat">Ocean Wave</placeName> and <placeName subtype="boat">Pilot Boy</placeName> came along with <objectName>hooks</objectName>. They were the <orgName subtype="regiment">6th N.H. 9</orgName> &amp; <orgName subtype="regiment">89 N.Y, 21 Mass</orgName>. <persPronouns>We</persPronouns> were to wait until <placeName subtype="boat">The Phil.</placeName> came along <persPronouns>She</persPronouns> came with a flat
               and <objectName>guns</objectName> on, and about five o’clock got under way across <placeName>the Sound</placeName>. The wind
               blew strongly and it was very rough making some sea-sick. We understand that we
               are to land at <placeName>Elizabeth City</placeName>, march up to <placeName>Grape Mills</placeName> destroy the <objectName>locks</objectName> &amp;
               come down the left Bank- root out some <objectName>batteries</objectName>. Its said our friends the <orgName subtype="regiment">3rd Georgia</orgName> &amp; <orgName subtype="regiment">Lousiana Tigers</orgName> are here - and that <persName>Gen Wise</persName> was seen in <placeName>EC </placeName>               yesterday </p>

            <fw>Friday 18. continued </fw>
            <p><name type="weather">The weather was warm but the wind makes it cool this evening.</name> Eight o'clock
               aground again. It would be very mortifying if <persPronouns>we</persPronouns> were left behind - especially
               would the jealous party for whom <persPronouns>we</persPronouns> were substituted would twit <persPronouns>us</persPronouns>.<persPronouns> I</persPronouns> have been
               unwell most of the day. But this evening I<persPronouns/> am pretty well. If the march is 25
               miles it will go tough with <persPronouns>me</persPronouns>.</p>
