The <objectName type="vehicle">Spaulding</objectName> and <objectName type="vehicle">Peabody</objectName> were taken up first to unload — then the <objectName type="vehicle">New York</objectName>, and then the <objectName type="vehicle">Cossack.</objectName> There is <objectName type="nature">twelve feet of water</objectName> at the <placeName>wharf,</placeName> and several fine <placeName><placeName type="warehouse">brick warehouses</placeName>,</placeName> <placeName>market houses</placeName>, and other <placeName>fine buildings</placeName>. We could see up one of the <placeName type="streets">streets</placeName>, which was narrow, lined and arched with<objectName type="nature"> trees,</objectName> and in the summertime must be very pretty.The different<orgName type="companies"> companies</orgName> were called off, one at a time, and names called and checked. We met some of the officers — <persName><persName type="captain">Capt. Picot,</persName></persName> <persName>Col. Jordan,</persName> and others. Their tone was changed since they got on their<objectName type="equipment"> sail </objectName>out of reach of us — false, fawning, in order to get well treated, apparently grateful.The <orgName>3rd Georgia Reg’t</orgName> was on duty, and I understood from one of their <orgName>lieutenants </orgName>that they were on duty along the <placeName>canal</placeName>. Some bitter conversation between them and <orgName>our men</orgName> ensued, until I ordered mine on board. <orgName>The officers</orgName> lie to their men without doubt. <persName>Capt. Picot</persName> said to<orgName> his men, </orgName>as soon as he saw them, “Boys, I have good news for you — we have licked them on the <objectName type="ship">Cumberland</objectName> and taken 5,000 <orgName>prisoners.</orgName>” That <orgName>3rd Georgia Reg’t</orgName> needs a dressing [bad?].We all parted with bitterer feelings — the more so that the ungrateful dogs gave us such an ill return for all the trouble and exertion we made to make them comfortable.In the forenoon, while waiting for our turn, I went with the <persName>captain</persName> <placeName type="shore">on shore</placeName>, onto the ruins of the <objectName type="equipment">propeller</objectName> [Jamy?], and where they had the battery. <objectName type="equipment">Four guns</objectName> lay there, but their <objectName type="equipment">carriages</objectName> were burned and their effectiveness destroyed.About four under <objectName type="equipment">sail </objectName>and steam ran down the sound and anchored at <placeName>Roanoke Island</placeName> about seven o’clock. It was <name type="weather">piercing cold </name>this evening. The <orgName>officers </orgName>on the <objectName type="vehicle">Spaulding</objectName> growled at their [fare?], but the<persName type="captain"> captain</persName> told them that they got better than they deserved.<pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary43.jpg"/> <fw>Friday 21.</fw> In the ruined battery were buried two men: <persName>Fred. [Herman?</persName>], seaman, and <persName>Thos. O’Mara, </persName><orgName>Co. A, Rhode Island Vols.</orgName>, who fell Feb. [10?], 1862, for his beloved country, as it was inscribed on their <objectName type="equipment">headboards</objectName>.
