man eighty years old . My <objectName type="clothing">boots</objectName> were scarcely dry, but fortunately <persName type="Chaplain">the Chaplain of the 21st</persName> had found a <objectName type="equipment">can of lard</objectName> and by a dint of greasing, and halling I got them on. I found outside quite a <placeName type="town">little town</placeName>. <objectName>Cabins</objectName> nicely built in streets for the men & log houses for the officers in the order of a regular camp. I saw a great many of <orgName type="rebels">the rebel prisoners</orgName>- among them the <orgName>Richmond Light infantry blues</orgName>, <persName type="real" cert="medium" key="Henry Wise" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper040">Capt Wise’s</persName> company, which had so handsomely, entertained <orgName>the New York 7th</orgName>. They were fine aristocrat looking fellows in <objectName type="clothing">grey uniform</objectName> like the Lewisburg greys. I found I was but two of three hundred yards from <placeName type="quarters">Reno’s quarters </placeName>through the wood. It was a handsomer set of barracks than the others - the houses built of <objectName type="equipment">boards</objectName> - the chimneys outside of <objectName type="nature">mud</objectName> and <objectName type="nature">sticks</objectName> plastered with mud. I found <persName cert="high" key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver</persName> in the <placeName>Col’s quarters</placeName> & <persName type="Colonel">the Col</persName> told me I need not go back as he had ordered the other companies to come up. During the forenoon I went down to see the <objectName type="equipment">forts</objectName> - there were three - one of eleven one of four, the other of ten - this last one was the one that was bombarded but it had not been materially injured at all. They had spiked the <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName>, cut the <objectName type="equipment">ropes</objectName>, threw most of the <objectName type="equipment">ammunition</objectName> into <placeName key="repeated">the swamp</placeName>. They are beautiful works built of<objectName type="nature">sod</objectName> and <objectName type="nature">sand</objectName> - and heavily armed with thirty two pounders some rifled - they are very formidable, & well manned could not well be taken. </p> <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary39.jpg"/> <fw><date when="1862-02-09">Sunday 9th</date> </fw> <p><objectName type="equipment">The batteries</objectName>, numbering three, are very nicely constructed of <objectName type="nature">sod</objectName> and <objectName type="nature">sand</objectName>. <placeName>The fort</placeName> just below here on <placeName>the beach</placeName> was called, <placeName type="beach" cert="medium" key="Fort Huger" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl032">Huger<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>, now <persName type="real" key="Jesse Reno" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper086">Reno</persName>, eleven <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName> next Blanchard, now <persName>Park</persName>, four <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName>mounted and a place for a fifth, lying on <placeName>the shore</placeName> at <placeName>the landing</placeName> - the third on <placeName>Pig point</placeName>, <placeName cert="high" key="Fort Bartow" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl004">Bartow<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>, now <placeName type="fort" cert="high" key="Fort Foster" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnp0l26">Fort Foster</placeName>. This latter was not injured any of account. There were two <objectName type="equipment">red guns</objectName> - one or two disabled. The barracks inside were burned and a great many <objectName type="equipment">arms</objectName>destroyed. Houses outside were perforated with shot & <objectName type="equipment">shell</objectName> and we saw many lying far back of it. A great deal of <objectName type="equipment">powder</objectName> had been thrown into <placeName key="repeated">the swamp</placeName>, and are in case number of <objectName type="equipment">arms</objectName> have been fished out of the swamps. On our way back, we met a party who had taken two prisoners. One a bright eyed fellow said he was from <placeName type="county" key="Craven County" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl019">Craven County</placeName> & that his company had worked the <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName> themselves. The fourth shot had disabled the <objectName type="equipment">gun</objectName>, and one man killed & three wounded was all the casualties. <persName cert="high" key="G. H. Hassenplug" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper035">Hassenplug</persName> found an old classmate of his when at <placeName type="college" cert="high" key="Union College" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl087">Union College<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>, <persName>Piot</persName> by name, from <orgName>Murfreesboro' capt of a company</orgName>. He knew <persName cert="high" key="John Blair Linn" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper051" type="real">John Blair Linn</persName>. They had long conversations of old times. He told us a great deal, which we did not altogether. I suppose they placed the same reliance on a great many of our statements. He said the army at <placeName key="Norfolk, Virginia" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl062">Norfolk</placeName> was 15.000 that was on <placeName>the Island</placeName> on Saturday during the battle, and was so hard pressed that he left his <objectName type="clothing">overcoat</objectName>. We heard the explosion of the fortification on Nags head on Saturday evening, but took it for an evening <objectName type="equipment">gun</objectName>from a <objectName type="equipment">nine inch shell gun </objectName>. <persName key="Jacob G. He has also one he took out of the cap of one that was shot in the last skirmish just before the the surrender near this camp.
