when="1862-02-07">Feb 7</date> </dateline> <p>This morning it was <name type="weather">clearer</name> but <name type="weather">rather cold</name>. The <objectName type="vehicle">gun boats</objectName> has moved up into the <placeName type="channel">Channel</placeName> between Roanoke Island and <placeName type="shore">the Tyrell shore</placeName>. We kept moving up slowly too - <objectName type="vehicle">the fleet</objectName> passed a bend at the point of <placeName>the island</placeName>, and we could see them across the point of <placeName key="repeated">the shore</placeName>. This took all the morning and we were eager spectators of the scene, until about half past eleven the <objectName type="vehicle">gun boats</objectName> opened on <placeName>the batteries</placeName>. Then commenced an awful cannonade. We watched the <objectName type="equipment">shells</objectName> bursting in every direction, some high in mid air some low close to the <objectName type="vehicle">ships</objectName>, and our <objectName type="equipment">shells</objectName> striking in every direction about <objectName type="equipment">the battery</objectName>. A black smoke enveloped<objectName type="equipment">the battery</objectName> - and the flames burst out - their barracks were on fire - twice they put them out and a third time they caught. We recognized the different <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName> - we especially admired a little sloop with one <objectName type="equipment">gun</objectName>, which sailed like a duck up and down delivering her fire with emphasis. <objectName type="ship">The Cossack</objectName> ran up within perhaps four miles & we had a beautiful and uninterrupted view of the my crossed our bow full, and drawing behind her about 30 <objectName type="vehicle">surf boats</objectName> filled with men. They stood over to our right. Just before this <objectName type="vehicle ">the Patuxent</objectName>passed up with <persName type="General">Reno</persName> on board - we cheered him. I got up on <placeName>the hog-frame</placeName> and waved my <objectName type="clothing">hat</objectName> to Tom Grier, whom I saw on <placeName type="ship">the hurricane deck</placeName>. When the boats had got off to the right they laid there - about five o'clock the signal for disembarking was given. <objectName type="ship">The Scout</objectName> had been lashed along side of <objectName type="vehicle">the Cossack</objectName> during the afternoon. <persName type="Lieutenant">Lieutenant Colonel Bell</persName> in attempting to cross from <objectName type="ship">the Scout</objectName> fell down between <objectName type="vehicle">the boats</objectName>. Fortunately the wheels were not going, and he climbed up the paddles and came out the door of <placeName type="boat">the wheel house</placeName>. </p> <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary35.jpg"/> <fw><date when="1862-02-07">Friday 7</date>.</fw> <p>Our <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName> had already been lowered. The two <objectName type="vehicle">surf boats</objectName> were to be towed by the small ones. Then <persName type="Captain">Captain Bennet</persName> & his <persName type="son">little boy</persName> got into the <objectName type="vehicle">small boat</objectName>. The color guard, I noticed <persName key="Peter Koser" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper067" cert="high" type="real">Peter Kozier</persName>, color corporal from our company among them, got into the boats and as many of <orgName type="company">Co. B</orgName>. <persName><persName type="Captain">Captain Bell</persName></persName>, as could got on board and put off. <orgName type="company">Co. A</orgName>. <persName type="Captain">Captain Bolton</persName> put off from <objectName type="ship">the Scout</objectName>. Soon <placeName>Croatan Sound</placeName> was full of little black specks moving toward <placeName key="repeated">the shore</placeName>. I think there must have near five thousand men moved at once. There were a few houses standing on the shore, and we observed a <orgName type="rebels">company of rebels</orgName> there but they ran as ours landed. We watched the first color planted on the shore and its black surrounding of men, then a second. It was now nearly dusk. The firing of the <objectName type="vehicle">gunboats</objectName> and <objectName type="equipment">battery</objectName> had nearly ceased. One of the little <objectName type="vehicle">black gunboats</objectName> came near us - we observed his stern somewhat decomposed. On inquiring he said one of his <objectName type="equipment">steel guns</objectName>burst and killed one man and wounded several others. We saw the Hunchback draw off with her and knocked out. The Delware covered the landing of <orgName type="troops">the troops</orgName> and the other gun boats formed in a line toward shore between <placeName>the battery</placeName> and <placeName>the place of landing</placeName>. We went below - <objectName type="coffee">coffee</objectName> hot and smoking, warm <objectName type="food">bread</objectName> and <objectName type="food">ham</objectName> on the <objectName type="equipment">table</objectName>, we thought to have a stomach full before we went. But the Deleware ran along side, and we were ordered off immediately - had hardly time to pour the scalding fluid down. It was now night - <objectName type="nature">the moon</objectName> struggling with fitful effort through the <name type="weather">dark banks of clouds</name>. <orgName>The 8 companies</orgName> were put on board and we left <placeName key="repeated">the Cossack</placeName>. When <objectName type="vehicle ">the steamer</objectName> was about a hundred yards from shore, a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> at the stern disembarked part of <orgName type="company">Co H</orgName> with myself and we made the shore. I formed them and sent <persName key="David Brewer" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper023">Dave Brewer</persName> up ahead to pick out the way. It was very dark and the ground boggy, so that it shook under our feet. <persName key="David Brewer" cert="high" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper023" type="real">Brewer</persName> had gone but a few yards when he suddenly disappeared, & I saw him bobbing up on the other side of a ditch "look out Captain heres a well" We passed it safely, and got abreast the bow of the boat where I waited and formed the whole company with a few missing who turned up afterwards however. Then we had to travel through <placeName type="repeated">a swamp</placeName> - a road had been formed of <objectName type="nature">saplings</objectName> but they were scattered and we often went in over boot top. We got on to <placeName>terra</placeName> <placeName>firma</placeName> pretty soon, and met <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver</persName>, who was acting as an aid to <persName type="Colonel">the Colonel</persName> who piloted us up to our place in <orgName type="Regiment">the Regiment</orgName>. We stacked <objectName type="equipment">arms</objectName>, placed sentinels over the stacks, I cautioned the men about an <objectName type="equipment">alarm</objectName>, that they should rise and take their places behind <placeName>the stacks</placeName>, and await orders to take arms. Then they dispersed to hunt <objectName type="nature">wood</objectName> & <objectName type="equipment">bedding</objectName>, <objectName type="nature">cornstalks</objectName>, <objectName type="nature">brush</objectName> etc. There was a house and some outbuildings and <objectName type="equipment">fences</objectName>. These latter were soon demolished to make fire<objectName type="nature">wood</objectName>, & an apparently well fence clearing of about 8 acres was soon as open as any common.
