            <date when="1862-01-24">Friday January 24.</date>
            <p>Last night the <name type="Weather">storm</name> burst down in fury and this forenoon it raged without
               intermission. This afternoon it cleared again, but the sound is still very rough.
               They took out the dead man and buried him on the <pb n="28"/>
               <fw><date when="1861-01-24">Friday January 24</date></fw></p><p>shore, with scarce room enough to do it. Those on
               shore said it was the fiercest storm we had here. The companies made <objectName type="equipment">presents</objectName> to
               the seamen who went for <objectName type="drink">water</objectName> for them. I was made officer of the day and worried myself considerably getting a <objectName type="readables">code of regulations</objectName> made - which I supplied will be
               effective for a few days, and then fall into discuse. It is the only objection I
               have here is that there is not the energy to carry out effective discipline and
               officers themselves somehow resist it. This now Friday - two days more it'll take
               to bring the <objectName type="vehicle">vessels</objectName> across the swash - &amp; then we will have some active work,
               I hope.</p>
