the <time>forenoon</time> - we were up early, had breakfast, and the two <objectName type="vehicle">ferry boats</objectName>, <objectName type="vehicle">Patuxent</objectName>, <objectName type="vehicle">Pond Curlew</objectName> came alongside. We all got out, with <objectName type="equipment">arms</objectName> and <objectName type="equipment">equipments</objectName> - our company getting on to the <objectName type="vehicle">Patuxent</objectName>. They were both fast to the <objectName type="vehicle">Cossack</objectName>, and worked and pushed and crashed each others sides at a desperate rate for a half hour. We began to fear that it would not move. While we were watching it listlessly, both <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName> fell back & raised together, and lifted the <objectName type="vehicle">Cossack</objectName> right off - We held our breath awhile to be sure it was moving - we saw all the other <objectName type="vehicle">ships</objectName> must be moving or else our long-hoped release had come - she moved sure, and we gave three hearty cheers. A little regardless perhaps in the delirium of moving again, the stem of the <objectName type="vehicle">Patuxent</objectName> struck a hole in our stern; it was crowded with men - one was knocked off his feet and jumped into the <objectName type="vehicle">light boat</objectName> - another pitched after him - The extent of the damage, however, was in drawing back of a <objectName type="equipment">musket</objectName>, and breaking off the front teeth of one of our men <persName role="Soldier" cert="high" key="Hugh M'Clure" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper005" type="real">Hugh McClure</persName>, but it was a very narrow escape. We dropped astern and then hauled up to a <objectName type="vehicle">schooner</objectName> & lashed fast. We watched them unloading the <objectName type="vehicle">horses</objectName> from the <objectName type="vehicle">Peabody</objectName>. It was anchored about 57 yards from shore - the <objectName type="vehicle">horses</objectName> pushed off the <objectName type="vehicle">ship</objectName> tumbling down 4 of 5 feet until they reached the water, & men in a<objectName type="vehicle"> boat</objectName> lead them by a<objectName type="equipment"> rope</objectName> to shore - It seemed a cruel way of doing it, but was accomplished safely. They were trotted around on shore, until there was no danger of chill. The Capt of the <objectName type="vehicle">Patuxent</objectName> is named <persName role="Captain" subtype="Bennet">Bennet</persName>, a short red faced man. The three <objectName type="vehicle">Ferry Boats</objectName> <objectName type="vehicle">Curlew</objectName>, <objectName type="vehicle">Pilot-boy</objectName> were chartered at <placeName role="City" subtype="Philadelphia" cert="high" key="Philadelphia" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl069">Philadelphia<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName> by the Government to go to <placeName role="Port" key="Port Royal" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl072">Port Royal</placeName> and put in here on account of streak of weather, & <persName role="Captain" subtype="Burnside" key="Ambrose Burnside" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper008">Burnside</persName> put them in to service. He used to run the Keystone state. He said he had been on this coast 16 years, and never knew such a week of such weather as last week. <time>About 11 o'clock </time> we got back to our home in the <objectName type="vehicle">Cossack</objectName>. Our Captain <persName role="Captain" subtype="Burnside" cert="high" key="Ambrose Burnside" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper008" type="real">Burnside,</persName> <persName subtype="Reno">Reno</persName> & the Pilot were sounding the channel across the swash this afternoon. I spent the afternoon reading. Some men from the Pocahontas came in the evening. They were wrecked about 15 miles above <placeName role="Fort" subtype="Hatteras" key="Hatteras Light House" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl046">Hatteras</placeName> light-house. Their <objectName type="equipment">boiler</objectName> gave out during the <name type="weather">storm</name>, anchored and dragged on shore - out of 120 <objectName type="vehicle">horses</objectName> save 17 - All the men were saved. The Pilot told me this evening that it is 52 miles to <placeName role="Island" key="Roanoke Island" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl076">Roanoke Island</placeName> - that any vessel that can cross teh swash would go up the Sound - but the rebels had taken up all the <objectName type="vehicle">light Boats</objectName> and <objectName type="equipment">buoys</objectName>. The name swash is probably a contraction of sea-wash. We are anchored just inside the inlet, but before we can get into the sound there is the <objectName type="nature">swash - a shoal of sand</objectName> yet to cross. We have a <objectName type="nature">sea-shell </objectName> mania. Parties go out to the shore and collect <objectName type="nature">shells</objectName> - some are very beautiful - some are lucky dogs and find nice ones. Others come in with a batch of very common looking <objectName type="nature">shells</objectName>.
