            <dateline>Monday 16.</dateline>
            <p>Another fine day, though somewhat cold and windy. I was at the <placeName>Court of Inquiry</placeName>.
               Adjourned at two. I went into the <placeName>House of Delegate</placeName>s. Heard two speeches on some
               resolutions with regard to the partition of <placeName>Maryland</placeName>, <placeName>Delaware</placeName>, and <placeName>Virginia</placeName>.
               <persName type="real">Cameron</persName> was fiercely denounced - and there was a secession speech denouncing
               <persName>Cameron</persName> Administration, the President and all - the Gentleman from St Mary's proclaimed
               the treason of <persName type="real">Cameron</persName>. I did not go to dress parade. The news of the burning of
               <placeName>Charlestown</placeName>, and the demand of England for the restitution of [Russian?] and [Slavic?] came on
               us. I believe if there were anything which could rouse a great enthusiasm
               in the North, even greater, it would be the prospect of a brush with England. The
               old hatred lingers. We would do it as readily as the house nation would pitch into
               it. <persName>Beaver</persName> and Little have went to town to visit the ladies.</p>
