C. S. Materiel<lb/> May 2, 1943<lb/> </dateline> <salute> Dear Mother, Dad, + Grandma -- </salute> </opener> <p> First of all -- business. You'll find a $100 money order inclosed. Will you please deposit it for me Dad, so that I can draw against it later in the month. I want to pay all my bills (board, laundry cleaning, orderly, etc) by check. </p> <p> My 2 bonds were deducted from my pay this month -- so they should be more or less on the way. Let me know when you get them. </p> <p> We go into khaki uniforms soon, so my salary this month will be spent for clothes again. I won't be able to save much besides the two bonds. Maybe next month, I can build the account up a bit. I'd like to build it up to about $200, and then leave it there. </p> <p> I've just finished giving my room a thorough going over. Mr. orderly is orderly in name only. I can stand it just so long and then I have to do something about it - so the room got a thorough dusting, sweeping, and general going over. I still haven't found enough ambition to wash the windows, however. I can just hear you saying "John's certainly an old bachelor." </p> <p> Church this morning was well attended dispite the fact that most of the OCS classes were moving + changing barracks. Our chaplain is the best, I've heard in the army. Umfortunately we lose him this week. I'm anxious to see what, the new one is to like. This one is from somewhere in Illinois. </p> <p> Thursday evening Dean and I had study hall and a busy evening of it. These boys really can ask a lot of questions. We have to be able to explain anything in the course. </p> <p> Dean's wife is here, by the way, and he has taken a house in town. From what I hear he was very lucky to get it. Shay's wife is due sometime this month -- so I suppose I shall be alone in the barracks before long. Of course there will be other boys here -- but none of the gang I came in with. </p> <p> I was out on the range Friday morning and spent my time conducting fire on the small arms + close combat range. Next time I go out, I suppose I shall be conducting anti-aircraft fire too. </p> <p> Saturday afternoon Wells and I went into town and did some shopping. Wells is at the uniform buying stage and I am keeping an eye open for a good buy in summer uniforms. </p> <p> Since Wells is soon to leave, his section had a dinner in town last night -- and Wells took me along. We had two beautiful big steaks apiece -- smothered in french fries. </p> <p> Your Wednesday letter has not yet arrived. I suppose you'll have some questions -- and I'll try to answer them in my Wednesday letter. </p> <p> We have a small class coming in this week, so I have an easy schedule. I have no classes Monday or Friday. I'll spend my "vacation" in the office reading -- but they are sure to dream up some job for me to do. </p> <p> I've anxious to hear what Pres Roosevelt. has to say on the radio tonight. Perhaps we shall find out whether FDR or John L. Lewis is running this country. If it turns out to be John L., then I shall obviously consider going AWOL + returning home. </p> <closer> I have some button polishing to do. so I shall close.<lb/> <salute>Love,</salute><lb/> <signed>John</signed> </closer> </div> </body> </text> </TEI>
