Sill., Okla.<lb/> April 18, 1943.<lb/> </dateline> <salute> Dear Mother, Dad, + Grandma -- </salute></opener> <p> My coat is in the cleaners, so I can't go anywhere to celebrate the big day -- but I'm enjoying myself here in the barracks listening to the radio -- reading -- and writing. The meals at my mess hall are better than any I could buy in town anyway, so I'm not losing out on that score. </p> <p> I did thank you for the money orders, I think, but thanks again. Yes I know. Grandma gave me her b-day gift before I left - and now that the day is here, that you again, Grandma. </p> <p> Your box arrived safely. The cade is moist and fresh -- and of course delicious -- and I appreciate the candy too. As far as I'm concerned candy of this type goes over far better than a box of assorted chocolates Shay and I tried out the case last night and enjoyed it immensely. I told Wells to come over and sample it too. </p> <p> I think I've already told you how much I appreciate the curtain + the radio. I don’t have any use for a bed cover mother. It would only be something else to worry about. I use my comforter to cover the bed during the day -- and it works perfectly -- even if it isn't decorative. </p> <p> Of course, I'm terribly sorry I'm not home. to help with housecleaning. It's the best time of year around home, and it makes me homesick just to think about it! maybe you can arrange to do your fall cleaning when I get my leave come six months. But if you do, I won't come home! </p> <p> Thank you for the stamps and the CA News. But why you enclosed the receipt for a bill with the Purity Candy Co., I don't know. I don’t have any use for it and it doesn't make particularly interesting reading -- so I'm sending it back. </p> <p> Thank you for depositing the money for me, Dad. </p> <p> Incidently, your letter had 3 cents. postage due on it, and I had to go over to the post office on the main post to pick it up -- but when I saw whose letter it was, I was more than glad I had made the trip. </p> <p> I had a postcand from Jessie Pangburn. Thank her for me, will you. It's awfully nice to know the folks at home are thinking of us once in awhile. </p> <p> The Material Dept. gets the officer canidates in their second week here -- so I'm keeping my eye open for familiar names + faces in each class. I haven't seen anyone yet -- but sooner or later I'll run into someone. If Sid Appelbaum does come here, I'm sure to discover it. </p> <p> Dean is from Cleaveland, Ohio -- I’m sure he is no relation to Aunt Stella's old boss. Dean, by the way has taken a house in town and his wife is joining him next week. Shay is moving to town too as soon as his wife's school is over -- so I'm due to be alone before very long. But by that time I'll have other new friends. </p> <p> This coming week I go into a full schedule of teaching and conduct study hall Tuesday night -- so I shall have a busy week. </p> <p> Some of the older men in the Department are moving out each week and the staff gets less and less -- so the work gets harder. Officer Canidate School is to be cut down in number -- and the staff will be cut accordingly. I may not be here a full year, after all -- however, there all no real indications that I won't be. In the army you just never know. I guess its really best not to count too much on being here for 12 months, and not to get too well settled -- for I may have to move any time comparitively short notice. </p> <p> The fellows from 56 who went to Bragg are going to classes again -- and are they burned up about it! </p> <closer> <salute>Love,</salute><lb/> <signed>John</signed> </closer> </div> </body> </text> </TEI>
