            <head>Wednesday March 12.</head>
            <p>This was a delightful day, and nothing could be pleasanter than our journey
               from <placeName key="Hatteras" type="Inlet">Hatteras</placeName> to <placeName key="New Berne">New Berne</placeName>? We [?] anchor at nine o'clock and steamed down the sound, past <placeName type="Inlet">Ocracoke inlet</placeName>, [?] <placeName type="Island">island [Brant?]</placeName> <placeName key="Island Shoals">Island shoals</placeName>, and felt some what
               anxious when we came to the place which indicated whether we went up the
               <placeName key="Pamlico Sound" type="Water">Pamlico</placeName> or <placeName key="Neuse River" type="River">Neuse</placeName>. The pilot soon assured us that we were for <placeName>New Berne</placeName> sure,
               but still it was disputed. About [?] o'clock we entered <placeName key="Neuse" type="River">Neuse River</placeName> and
               steamed slowly up, the gunboats nosing into every bank and [?] until at 1/2
               past seven we anchored. [?] some three miles from <placeName>New Berne</placeName>. An exciting chase
               after two little sail boats by the <placeName key="Picket" type="Ship">Picket</placeName>, she firing a shot across the bow of
               each. We saw her come up with them in tow after dark. We observed all along the
               shores fired kindled raising dense smoke, apparently signal fires to warn of
               our approach. The sun set in glorious splendor over the quiet waters. Our band
               played the national airs on deck in the quiet moonlight. <persName key="Morris" role="Lt.">Morris</persName> came on board
               with orders. He gave us another report we don't believe. That the <placeName key="Merrimac" type="Ship">Merrimac</placeName>
               came out at <placeName key="Norfolk, VA">Norfolk</placeName>, sunk the <placeName key="Congress" type="Ship">Congress</placeName> and <placeName key="Minnesota" type="Ship">Minnesota</placeName>, played [?] [blues?] with the
               <placeName key="Cumberland" type="Ship">Cumberland</placeName>, but the <placeName type="Ship">Little [?]</placeName> stuck to her and disabled her so that she had to
               put back to <placeName key="Norfolk, VA">Norfolk</placeName>. Now will take a good nights rest and prepare for the
               battle tomorrow. I saw the <persName role="Adjt">adjt</persName>. write his resignation this evening. Ill health
               the cause - hemorrhage of the lungs. We feel that we will succeed tomorrow, but
               that it will be a hard fought battle. My hope is that <placeName key="Pennsylvania">Pennsylvania</placeName> will not be
               disgraced.</p>
