            <dateline>Friday June 2<date when="1862-06-27"/>7. 1862.</dateline>
            <p>This was a <name type="weather">fine day</name> – <name type="weather">hot</name> however in the middle of it – yet giving us a breeze.
               Bayonet exercise as usual; and this afternoon, Regimental skirmish drill:
               deployed by wings, I was senior captain of the left wing and in command of it.
               We drilled by the <objectName type="equipment">bugle</objectName> - then <persName cert="medium" key="Thomas Bell" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper072" type="real">Capt. Bell</persName> gave us a splendid exhibition of
               skirmish drill with bayonet exercise. The artillery were practicing at target
               and we were amused with the bursting of <objectName type="equipment">shells</objectName>. <persName cert="high" key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver</persName> and <persName key="George Shorkley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002" type="real">Shorkley</persName> went to
               town. We got a <objectName type="packages">mail</objectName> that came by way of <placeName cert="high" key="Norfolk, Virginia" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl062">Norfolk<precision match="@ref" precision="medium"/></placeName>. Old stuff, but some <objectName type="readables">papers</objectName> are
               as late as the 24th. We get our <objectName type="readables">letters</objectName> by way of <placeName key="New York" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl061">New York</placeName>. Rec'd a <objectName type="readables">paper</objectName>
               published by <persName>Orwig</persName> and <persName>Haus</persName> at <placeName>Mifflinburg</placeName> </p>
