            <dateline><date when="1862-06-09">Monday 9th</date></dateline>
            <p>The day was <name type="weather">dark</name> and lowering, and in the evening set in <name type="weather">rain</name> and <name type="weather">rained</name> all
               the night. We had a <orgName type="military">brigade</orgName> drill this afternoon at 4 o’clock down near the <orgName type="military">21 Mass</orgName> camp. The <orgName type="military">1st brigade</orgName> were drilling there too, and <persName key="Reno" type="general">Gen Reno</persName> was looking on
               &amp; reviewed us afterwards. Just after dinner <persName key="Lynch" type="general">Lynch</persName> <persName key="Hassenplug" type="captain">Hassenplug</persName> &amp; I went
               over to a <placeName key="plantation">plantation</placeName> across the creek for <name key="food"><objectName>honey</objectName></name> &amp; <name key="food"><objectName>mutton</objectName></name>. It was fun to see
               the n---- destroying the “<objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName>” — a bunch of <objectName type="nature">bees</objectName> got in their <objectName type="equipment">wool</objectName>. This
               <placeName type="plantation">plantation</placeName> is immense and poverty stricken. We got a large <objectName type="readable">mail</objectName>. </p>
