            <dateline><date><date when="1862-03-24">Monday 25.</date></date></dateline>
            <p><note>This is mis-dated. March 25th was a Tuesday in 1862. It appears that Linn miscalculated and that this should have been Monday March 24th.</note>I went to the <objectName type="ship">Jenny </objectName>— the <objectName type="ship">Curlew</objectName> runs over every fifteen minutes, just where the bridge was burned. I was one minute too late. Just then<persName key="George Shorkley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002"> Lt. Shorkley</persName> and <persName key="Lt. Gaulen" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper149">Lt. Gaulen</persName> came up in a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName>, and as they told me there was nothing to be done in camp, and as my luxurious quarters last night gave me a cold, I concluded to stay. I acted as guide, and took them to see what remained of <persName>Gov. Lyon’s</persName> palace, the <placeName>cemetery</placeName>, and the car house. Then we went into a French bootmaker’s. <persName key="Lt. Gaulen" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper149">Gaulen </persName>talked to him in his own tongue. Met <persName key="John Morris" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper057">Morris</persName>, who took us around to Gen. Reno’s quarters — a white house, nicely furnished. While here, a chaplain told us a romantic story of <persName key="Dr. Cutter" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper124">Dr. Cutter</persName>’s daughter, the brigade surgeon of the 2nd Brigade, who died this morning here of what they call the Roanoke fever. She had requested to be taken to <placeName key="Roanoke Island" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl076">Roanoke Island</placeName> and buried beside a young man by the name of <persName>Plummer</persName>, whose real name was <persName>Lidd</persName>, and who was with <persName key="John Brown" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper052">John Brown</persName> in <placeName key="Virginia" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl089">Virginia</placeName>, and who had been attacked by some disease of the stomach.<pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary51.jpg"/>the night before. The battle of Roanoke, and died the same night. We went from there and dined at the <placeName key="Gaston House" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl112">Gaston House</placeName>. <objectName type="food">Corn bread</objectName>, <objectName type="food">rice soup</objectName>, <objectName>roasted Irish potatoes</objectName>, and <objectName type="food">rice pudding</objectName> was all [we had?] at the first-class hotel.
