yet,</name> especially in contrast with the <name type="weather">stormy preceding ones</name>. The <name type="weather">air deliciously pure, the sun bright & warm</name>, so that it was relaxing to be <placeName key="on deck">on deck</placeName>. We had company inspection and the doctor inspected us too. We had to send <persName key="Albion G Knode" role="Private">Knode</persName> and <persName key="Henry Adam" role="Private">Adam Henry</persName> on shore, the former with the mumps and the latter with symptoms, either of fever or small pox. They were both very reluctant. We spent the day <objectName type="readable">reading</objectName>, loafing and smoking. <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" role="Lt.">Lt. Beaver</persName> went on shore to see the sick. All are doing very well except <persName key="Kelly">Kelly</persName>, whose face is swollen so as not to be recognizable. [NAME?] has turned out small pox too. The <objectName type="vehicle">vessels</objectName> that went up the <placeName key="Sound" type="Water">Sound</placeName> re- turned this evening. There is a vague <objectName type="readable">report</objectName> that they have 2000 prisoners but is very improbable. The different regiments appear to fear <orgName key="Company H">our Regiment</orgName> worse than the rebels. It is [?] that we have the small pox bad. We have everybody that has the least symptoms of sickness sent ashore, and I really believe that [?] <persName key="Lynch" role="Lt.">Lt Lynch</persName> is the only officer that had the varoioid. He is doing very well. <persName key="Buskin">Buskin</persName> & <persName key="Perkin" role="Cap">Cap. Perkin</persName> are sick, but not with that disease. <persName role="Col">The Col.</persName> was telling us that there has been a quiet fight going on to oust our Regiment from the expedition. There was an effort of the kind at <placeName key="Annapolis, MD">Annapolis</placeName>. There <persName key="Church" type="Dr.">Dr. Church</persName> ordered our <orgName key="51st Regiment">Regiment</orgName> into camp, but <persName key="Reno" role="Gen.">Gen. Reno</persName> evinced a determination to the contrary, and stood by us. The wish to have the glory ex- clusively Eastern. But our officers kept their eyes open, and <persName key="Reno" role="Gen.">Gen Reno</persName> happily being a Pennsylvanian has stood by us. The impression appears to be that we will sail tomorrow at nine o'clock, but as to which way there seems to be a doubt. <persName key="Morris" role="Lt">Morris</persName> says we are going to <placeName key="Newbern, NC" type="City">Newbern</placeName>. But why all the <objectName type="vehicle">vessels</objectName> and troops were brought up from <placeName key="Hatteras Island" type="Inlet">Hatteras</placeName> to return. The same route seems queer. However there is no telling where it will be. One thing we feel confident about is that our generals what they are doing, and will certainly take us safely through. I am anxious to get <objectName type="readable">papers</objectName> and <objectName type="readable">letters</objectName> to <persName key="Reno" role="Gen.">Reno</persName>. What they are doing in the outside world. We are to take three <objectName type="vehicle">schooners</objectName> in tow.</p> </div> </body> </text> </TEI>
