            <docDate when="1862-01-10">Friday January 10 1862.</docDate>
            <p>The <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> stopped last night about eleven o'clock on account of the density of the
               <name type="Foggy">fog</name>. This morning the fog was still very thick, could not see fifty paces ahead.
               About nine o'clock there were signs of clearing &amp; the Captain ordered the
               <objectName type="Equipment">engines</objectName> to get up steam. We are still thirty miles from <placeName key="Hampton Road Center" ref="https://sws.geonames.org/7276160">Hampton Roads</placeName>. Some time
               after we started, we had dinner at half past 12 o'clock, and we went on deck. Soon
               we saw the masts of <objectName type="Equipment">vessels</objectName> looming through the fog. Then the red light boat, the Kiptopeke, <placeName key="Sewells Point" ref="https://sws.geonames.org/4784950">Sewells point</placeName> and <placeName key="Fort Monroe, Va." ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/126688669">Fortress Monroe</placeName> There were three men of war - the
               sailors manned the yards and cheered. We cheered in return. We soon recognized
               some of our acquaintances. The New York, New Brunswick. We dipped our <objectName>flag</objectName> as we
               came in. We anchored off the fortress toward <placeName key="Sewells Point" ref="https://sws.geonames.org/4784950">Sewall's point.</placeName> The ripraps are a heap of
               rocks out to the left of us, with some stone walls, 2 stone houses, and some <objectName type="Equipment">poles</objectName>
               with <objectName type="Equipment">ropes</objectName> stretched. I saw but one cannon perched up pointing toward Sewall's point.
               It looked an acre or so in extent, and is exactly like the summit of <placeName>Mount Washington</placeName>. <placeName>Willoughby</placeName> point was [?] on the red light <objectName type="vehicle ">boat.</objectName> The day cleared, but
               it was still <name type="Smoky ">smoky</name> - we looked with interest upon the places we had so often read
               about. We were all soon in the cabin preparing our letters to send <placeName key="Lewisburg">home</placeName>. I wrote
               one to <persName key="Margery, Aunt" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/68693074" cert="unknown" type="identifiable">Aunt Margery</persName>, one to the Chronicle and one to <persName key="Annie" ref="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q566893">Annie</persName>. We went up after
               supper, but saw nothing but a <objectName type="vehicle">gunboat</objectName> out towards <placeName key="Sewells Point" ref="https://sws.geonames.org/4784950">Sewalls point</placeName>, used as a
               <objectName type="vehicle">watch-boat</objectName>. <persName>Lt Col Bell</persName> came on board and took tea with us. It was so <name type="Foggy">foggy</name> that
               we could see nothing until we entered<origPlace> Hampton Roads.</origPlace> <placeName key="Virgina " ref="https://sws.geonames.org/4784950">Sewalls Point</placeName> is a long low
               reach of sand, covered with woods. I could see a house and barn a mile perhaps
               from the point. We could not distinguish anything at all on the point, except that
               the sand appeared who reached up along the edge of the wood, but that may have
               been done by the action of the waves. The fleet here is not so imposing in
               appearance, as up at <placeName key="Annapolis, Md." ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/123791303">Annapolis</placeName> - perhaps because the harbor is wider. <persName cert="unknown" type="identifiable">Hassenflug</persName>,
