            <dateline>On board Steamship Cossack Tuesday <date when="1862-01-07">January 7 1862</date></dateline>
            <p>I slept splendidly last night and we turned out about seven o'clock. We began to
               wonder where breakfast was to come from, when <persName key="George Shorkley" role="Lt">Lt. Shorkley</persName> was appointed commissary
               for the officers, and under his energetic supervision we had breakfast dinner and
               supper. He and <persName cert="medium" key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003" type="real">Beaver</persName> were out nearly all day laying in a stock of provisions. The
               ship <objectName type="vehicle">Cossack</objectName> was formerly the <objectName key="Ship">Eastern City</objectName> and is now painted black - it was
               evidently painted white before. It is an ocean <objectName type="Equipment">steamer</objectName> I think used between
               <placeName type="City">Portland, Maine &amp; Boston or New York.</placeName> It is about 300 feet long and sixty wide.
               The lady's cabin, the officers quarters, is about 30 or more feet long - has
               thirty berths, - Brussels <objectName type="Furniture ">carpet</objectName> - dainty <objectName type="Furniture ">curtains</objectName> - recess - a<objectName type="Furniture "> washing place</objectName> -
               large <objectName type="Furniture ">mirrors</objectName> &amp; otherwise like all those large <objectName type="Vehicle">steamboats</objectName>. This was a <name type="Sunny">bright</name> fine day, and this evening the moon is shining over the waters - the <objectName type="Vehicle">ships</objectName> and
               <objectName type="Vehicle ">steamboats</objectName> with their signal lights - the <placeName key="Hatteras Light House" cert="medium" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl046">light house<precision match="@ref" precision="medium"/></placeName> - the <name type="Snow">snow</name> covered banks -
               make a lovely scene - add to this the bands in every <objectName type="vehicle">ship </objectName>are playing - ours is
               now playing Dixie - they played it first before the general was beaten - as we
               left our camping ground yesterday. I amused myself up on deck with my <objectName type="Equipment ">glass</objectName> - then
               reading a message from the sea. The<name type="Windy"> <name>wind</name> was pretty high</name> this morning: it rocked
               our <objectName>boat</objectName> very slightly. I felt the dizziness without exactly knowing exactly what
               it was until I look out of the <objectName>windows</objectName> and saw the waves running pretty high. We
               have everything embarked and ready except our horses. Another regiment came down
               from <placeName cert="high" key="Washington, D.C." ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl091">Washington, <precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>I think a<placeName> <origPlace>Connecticut</origPlace> </placeName>regiment, so that all are now embarked. The
               British ship <objectName key="ship ">Imolita</objectName>, 37 Armstrong <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName>, is lying off the light house. Her
               officers were in town - <persName>Capt Hancock </persName>- and they told their officers that they had
               been sent to bring away <persName>Lord Lyons,</persName> had not the difficulty been settled. The
               British ungenerous exaltation over what they call our back - out, will only serve
               to increase that American feeling for a fight, which will burst out in violence
               some of these days. We have now an immense army - soldiers training for fight, and
               they will need employment. I received two <objectName type="Readable">letters</objectName> by this mornings mail, one from
               <persName>John</persName> and one from <persName cert="medium" key="Laura Sheller Linn" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper016" type="real">Laura</persName>. When I come to think of it, it seemed like yesterday that
               I received it. This day has been long and short. <persName cert="high" key="John Morris" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper057">John Morris</persName> was in and told us,
               that <persName>Gen Reno,</persName> had been so heartily disgusted with the 21st Mass. for being
               generally drunk, that he threatened to remove his staff from the Northerner to our
               boat. <persName><orgName key="Major">Maj</orgName>. Clark </persName>urged him to wait till this morning, when he said if it were no
               better he would do so. <persName key="John Morris">Morris</persName> looks as gay riding around in the little boats as he
               does on his bay. He is very popular and the men think if any thing can be done
               <persName key="John Morris" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper057">Morris</persName> will do it. I was just coming down stairs to hunt berths for some men, when
               I met the officers of the <objectName type="Vehicle">boat</objectName> rushing up stairs. I went out to the side &amp; saw them lower the captain's gig in hot haste. I went out to the other side and
               heard the most agonizing scream of drowning men "I'm drowning" "let go my legs"
               &amp; I waited until the officers returned. They reported they had rescued four
               men, one clinging to the wheel and three on the surf <objectName type="Equipment ">boards</objectName>. The side wheel
               <objectName type="Equipment">steamer</objectName> run over a<objectName type="Equipment "> boat</objectName> of the Chasseur, loaded it is said with 23 men nineteen of whom
               were saved. I was in harrowing suspense until I found out that it was not one of
               our <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName> but returned with three of our men just after it happened. Part of the
               8th <placeName key="Connecticut" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl017">Connecticut</placeName> are on board the Chasseur. It was bright moonlight - we could see the
               men struggling in the water, and their screams were awful. I heard on firm manly
               voice raise above the din of the confusion, "Keep cool its all right" and at once
               it all seemed to subside. The side wheel <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> has been considered the nuisance of
               these waters running in to every one. It must have been gross carelessness to have
               run into the <objectName type="vehicle">boat </objectName>on such a night as this.</p>
