facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary76.jpg"/> <dateline><date when="1862-06-12">Thursday 12</date>.</dateline> <p><note>Linn gives the wrong day of the week for the continuation of June 12 and June 13</note> This morning I went down to the <orgName type="military">48th Penna</orgName>, to take their <objectName type="readible">affidavits</objectName> on their claims for back pay. I walked down & back - about 4 miles in all — I dined with the Major — but they never so much as said “Thank You.” They never asked me whether I charged fees, or anything about it — never expressed any regret for my long walk in the broiling <objectName type="weather">sun</objectName> — it sort of astounded me. Afterwards they <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary77.jpg"/> <fw>Wed June 12 1862.</fw> treated me very cordially - but it was essentially dutch. <persName key="Shorkley" type="adjutant">Shorkley</persName> got quite indignant at it. While there I saw the first <objectName type="vehicle">Locamotive</objectName> come up from <placeName type="city" cert="high" key="Beaufort" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl005">Beaufort<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>, and cross over the new <objectName type="equipment">bridge</objectName>. We all cheered it as it passed. At 3 o'clock we marched to the <orgName type="military">51st Camp</orgName> to <orgName type="military">Brigade</orgName> drill. <persName key="Ferrero" type="officer">Ferrero</persName> is a fine drill officer. <persName key="Foster" type="general">Gen Foster</persName> and staff, with <persName key="Wauman" type="general">Gen [Wauman]</persName> Adjt. Gen of <placeName type="state">Rhode Island</placeName> - who comes, I hear, to present the <objectName type="equipment">sword</objectName> voted to <persName key="Burnside" type="general">Gen. Burnside</persName>, by the <orgName type="government"> Legislature of Rhode Island</orgName> - and we had an impromptu review. In riding from the right to the front <persName key="Foster" type="general">Gen Foster </persName>put his <objectName>horse</objectName> to his speed & the little militia General was well put to - he looked as much scared as Gilpon & his <objectName type="clothing">pants</objectName> crawled up to his crotch - & he had to get off to have them pulled down. It goes easy to drill by <orgName type="military">brigade</orgName> but the awkwardness of it at first shows the necessity of men being drilled in masses. <persName key="Stanley" type="governor">Gov. Stanley</persName> with <persName key="VanHeusen" type="lieutenant">Lt. Van Heusen</persName> rode into camp this evening just as we returned, adn appeared pleased with this quiet beauty. Last night <persName key="Beaver" type="private">Beaver</persName> and I staid up until one o'clock to see the <name type="weather">Eclipse</name>. We watched it until the moon was wholly eclipsed & then retired. It is a hard matter to stay up late. It goes hard with me. <persName key="Beaver" type="private">Lt Beaver</persName> is officer of the guard, and has to be up this evening or tonight. <persName key="Shorkley" type="private">Shorkley</persName> has gone to town to a meeting of <orgName type="brotherhood">Masons</orgName>.
