night and there was no sleep. We sat by a miserable little fire all night. Sometimes I dozed and dreamed of being in <placeName>the comfortable cabin</placeName> of <placeName type="ship">the Cossack</placeName>, to wake with a start to find myself miserably cold and wet. So all passed the night. I don't know, but I think I suffered more than ever I did. Towards morning, perhaps between five and six, we all went over to <placeName>the porch of the house</placeName>,<persName type="real" cert="high" key="George Shorkley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002">Shorkley</persName>, <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver</persName> & I, and though it was crowded, I sat down & took a few winks of sleep. A few shots were fired, & every body ran. We got back to <orgName type="group">our company</orgName> and found them quietly standing behind their stacks, ready to take <objectName type="equipment">arms</objectName>. We took <objectName type="equipment">arms</objectName>, dressed, & stood some time. <objectName type="equipment">The alarm </objectName>passed. I formed the men according to their numbers; we could not do it last night. I divided them into platoons & sections, and we stood in the <name type="weather">drizzling rain</name>. The different regiments formed, some had lapped with us in the darkness of the night. There were perhaps two thousand men there. <orgName>Our regiment</orgName> came out with over 800 men, My <orgName type="group">company 73</orgName>.The first Brigade started about seven o'clock. <persName type="real" cert="high" key="Jesse Reno" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper086">Reno</persName>, <persName key="Ambrose Burnside" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper008">Burnside</persName> were about. <persName type="friend" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper057" key="John Morris">Morris</persName> came across to us with a great big <objectName type="equipment">sword</objectName> with a <objectName type="equipment">steel scabbard</objectName> buckled on him. None of the officers had their <objectName type="vehicle">horses</objectName>. "You'll soon have orders to march are you ready". "Yes". We teased <persName key="John Morris" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper057">Morris </persName>about his big <objectName type="equipment">sword</objectName> he could scarcely draw it & return it, it was so long. I saw <persName type="real" cert="medium" key="Joseph Antoine Viguier De Monteil" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper061">Lt. Col Monteil</persName> cross <placeName>the field</placeName> to <placeName>the house</placeName>, the first time I had seen him since I sat as judge advocate </p> <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary36.jpg"/> <fw>Saturday continued. </fw> <p>About up past seven, we heard some shots and then a volley of musketry. <persName cert="high" key="John Foster" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper055">Foster</persName> was driving in the <objectName type="equipment">pickets</objectName>. Then bang went the <objectName type="equipment">artillery</objectName>, then musketry, and so it kept up. We moved up - <persName>the head of our brigade</persName> had already entered the wood, and <orgName>our regiment</orgName>. still standing in the clear, when the first wounded man was carried along - then another and another - it was the most trying thing we had to endure. But the officers were all cool and calm, and every command was given in a clear voice, & it seemed to keep the courage up. We passed up a narrow road through the wood, just wide as a <objectName type="nature">wagon track</objectName>, like our mountain roads, <objectName type="nature">thickets</objectName> of <objectName type="nature">low pines</objectName> and <objectName type="nature">bushes</objectName>. It was just like the roads up around Reng<persName/>l<persName/>er’s old <objectName type="equipment">mill</objectName>. Then it was thick with wounded men carried and limping past us. Double quick - came to a mud puddle, we were dainty at the first & got around it, which broke us up a little, but the next one we dashed through. An occasional <objectName type="equipment">shell</objectName> and <objectName type="equipment">bullet</objectName> whistled, but we could see nothing but the regiment winding through<placeName key="repeated">the wood</placeName> ahead - we turned off through the wood at a double quick, and got into another road - the battle we could hear, raged fiercely - every step we met wounded and dying and exhausted, and some to whom we strongly suspected of being prematurely exhausted. <persName>An officer</persName> came and told me to send word to <persName type="Colonel">my Col</persName>. to send a <orgName type="group">company of skirmishers</orgName>out to the right. I thought of aids & officers giving orders without authority, but still determined to obey orders, and sent up <persName type="Sergeant">Sergt Etwine</persName> with the order. <persName key="repeated">The Col</persName> afterwards told me that some company at the head, relieved him of that, agreeing to deploy. We passed <placeName>the hospital</placeName>, which was so near that several men who carried the wounded there were killed. Zing goes a <objectName type="equipment">shell</objectName> over our heads, and a piece struck a man lying down to rest & killed him. We came to a halt - <orgName key="repeated">our regiment</orgName> had turned to the left by order, but could not get through. <orgName>My company</orgName> was just at the point where we had turned off the road. <persName>The Col</persName> sent word forward that he couldn't advance on the left. <orgName type="group">The Rhode Island regiment</orgName> came through the woods and passed by the head of my co. up the road. I stood with <persName key="repeated">the Col</persName> on a <objectName type="nature">log</objectName> at the fork of the roads when a volley of musketry passed over our heads, accompanied by a <objectName type="equipment">shell</objectName>. We got down rather suddenly. Here, the <objectName type="equipment">bullets</objectName> sang unpleasantly near. Orders came for us to leave so much of our Regt. as had passed the fork of <placeName>the road</placeName> and turn the rest to the right up the road. There, thinks I, I am to lead the column. Everything was so uncertain, we did not know where the enemy was, musketry sounded all over - all around - it was wood and brush & nobody to be seen - we soon saw things, however, with more than the eye of faith. <orgName type="company">Co D </orgName>Second company ahead of me was turned off leaving two companies and <persName type="real" cert="medium" key="Thomas Bell" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper072">Lt. Col Bell</persName> in the <objectName type="nature">thicket</objectName> on the left - Double quick up, up we go - <objectName type="equipment">balls</objectName>,<objectName type="equipment">shell</objectName> flying somewhere - I saw <persName key="Jesse Reno" cert="high" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper086">Gen Reno</persName> at the corner of <placeName key="repeated">the wood</placeName> -<persName key="John Morris" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper057" type="real">John Morris</persName>, then our <objectName type="equipment">brass</objectName> field pieces, then all our other regiments lying flat down then an opening two or three hundred yards broad, then the battery of the enemy, the belching fire and smoke, the pail report of rattle of <objectName type="equipment">balls</objectName> all around and above us- wanging into the <objectName type="nature">trees</objectName> - here we came into <placeName key="Great Dismal Swamp" cert="medium" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl041">a swamp <precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>up to our knees in mud & deeper - a poor fellow lie all doubled up beside a felled <objectName type="nature">pine tree</objectName>, we tramp on over him - we were in front of the enemies battery, in full view, crossing to gain their right - <placeName key="Great Dismal Swamp" cert="medium" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl041">the swamp <precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>was tangled so that the regiment halted and we lay down right in front of the battery.<placeName key="Great Dismal Swamp" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl041">The swamp</placeName> was just like a pine swamp - I've been in both, and this was worse. Up again to run the <objectName type="equipment">gauntlet</objectName>. We lay there for ten or twenty minutes flat on <placeName>the ground</placeName>. We gained the right and went plunging through the swamp up to our waists. <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" cert="high" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver </persName>was standing on a stump collecting the different companies - I never saw more than half a dozen of my company. I was standing on a stump looking ahead, when I saw <persName key="George Shorkley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002" type="real">Shorkley</persName> about ten yards ahead, plunging through, calling <orgName type="company">co. H</orgName>. It bewildered me to see him there. I wondered how the rear of my company could have gotten there. <persName>Billy Allison</persName>, <persName cert="high" key="David Brewer" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper023" type="real">Brewer</persName>, <persName cert="medium" key="William F. Campbell" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper004">Sergt Campbell</persName> &<persName key="Charles Merrill" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper020" type="real">Charles Merrill</persName> were with me generally and others who appeared and disappeared I rushed ahead and found that <persName key="George Shorkley" cert="high" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002">Shorkley</persName> had but two or three with him. He had cut across and got ahead of our colors - we still dispute how it happened, he alleging that I followed the Rhode Island colors. That couldn't be, as <orgName key="group">the Rhode Islanders</orgName> were still further to our right. However, <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003" type="real">Beaver</persName> appeared on a <objectName type="nature">stump</objectName>, and he was calling to <orgName type="company">co. H</orgName> away to the right to come over to <persName>the capt</persName> - We were certainly ahead of our colors, for they came up afterwards, part of our company having followed it. Here we halted and got collected. <orgName key="repeated">The Rhode Islanders</orgName> on our right parallel. Here we heard a cheer. The rear companies of our Regt were still in front of the battery. We all took it up and cheered when they told us our colors were planted on the enemy battery. <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary37.jpg"/>Just before it, however, we saw a man in a <objectName type="nature">tree</objectName> making signals. One from our regiment stepped out without orders. The man disappeared. <persName key="Charles Merrill" cert="high" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper020">Charles Merrill</persName> was with me, though, and he kept on talking in his usual quiet way. He said he had been in <placeName>Pine Swamp</placeName>, but this was worse. He had been hardly able to do any service since he had been here, but he was one of the quietest, cheerful soldiers I ever saw & he walked along, waded rather, with his <objectName type="equipment">musket</objectName>&gt; on his shoulder, <objectName type="equipment">canteen</objectName>, and <objectName type="equipment">haversack</objectName> just as if he were in the courtroom walking round the bar. We pushed on - <persName key="repeated">the Rhode Island </persName>and ours got mixed. We came out on the right and the front of <objectName type="equipment">the battery</objectName>. Here we had to wade through <placeName>a pond</placeName> up to our middle, but there was <objectName type="equipment">the battery</objectName>. The right wing of <orgName key="repeated">our regiment</orgName>, drawn up, was marching on. We had to stop to form, and it was nearly an hour before it formed. By this time, all <orgName key="repeated">the troops</orgName> had left, and our battalion was ordered to remain at first to draw the <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName>, & then to stay in the <placeName>battery</placeName>. I chafed at this. However, while forming, I left <orgName>the company</orgName> to go to <objectName type="equipment">"the battery</objectName>. Here, I met <persName key="Charles Mallory" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper019" type="real">Mr. Mallory</persName> & he shook hands with us, congratulating us on our safe delivery. I remember saluting him just as we left our bivouac ground in the morning as we marched fast to go to the wood, and his face said, "he might not see us again in life." We lost but two or three. I went on to the road on the left of &gt;<objectName type="equipment">the battery</objectName> - just at the corner lay a dead man - and on the right just by the gun of the embrasure <persName>a handsome dark skinned man</persName>, black whiskers and mustache & hair I noticed his delicate hands and small feet - he lay on his back his eye staring wide open, handsome even in his miserable surroundings - half imbedded in mud - hands blackened with powder - no uniform - had a <objectName type="clothing">pea jacket</objectName>, and <objectName type="clothing">fine underclothes</objectName> - with "Seldon" written on his <objectName type="clothing">undershirt</objectName> and <objectName type="clothing">waistband of his drawers</objectName> I learned afterward he was <persName type="Lieutenant">Lt. Seldon</persName>, son of <persName type="Doctor">Dr Seldon of Norfolk</persName> - that <persName type="real" cert="medium" key="Henry Shaw" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper038">Col. Shaw</persName> cautioned him against exposing himself - "Damn them they can't hit me" he scarcely said it when he fell pierced through below the eye. At the centre gun lay a mule still in harness, probably to draw off the <objectName type="equipment">gun</objectName> - looked, very much, as if it had its throat cut - but <persName type="Colonel">Col Jordan</persName> of the Rebels said it was killed by a <objectName type="equipment">mine-ball</objectName>. Farther over lay a muscular man, with large red whiskers - a <objectName type="equipment">ball</objectName> had struck him in the back of the head, and his brain had oozed out into his <objectName type="clothing">hat</objectName> until it was full. There were five or six dead men lying in the fort. A wall tent was pitched on the left. Two wounded rebel officers were lying there. <persName type="real" cert="medium" key="Lt. Col. Potter" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper097">Lt. Col. Patter</persName> who entered the fort from the left said that when a few of our men approached one of the them he cut at them with his <objectName type="equipment">sword</objectName>, and on his asking him why, he did so, he said he had heard that we were ordered to give no quarter. If officers believed that, what should their men believe? We later learned that they thought so; I had been told so by their officers. The most disagreeable thing was to see that the dead had been all robbed - pockets turned inside out - <objectName type="equipment">buttons</objectName> cut off for relics. I was attracted to look at <persName key="repeated">Seldon</persName> again, & found his name had been cut out in both places. I walked around through <placeName key="repeated">the swamp</placeName> & dead bodies were lying scattered around through it. We had dragged one of the <objectName type="equipment">cannon</objectName> some distance when <persName key="Ambrose Burnside" cert="high" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper008" type="real">Burnside</persName> ordered them back, and the balance of our regiment was ordered to stay in <placeName>the fort</placeName>. Owing to the constant <name type="weather">wet weather</name> and exposure with no <objectName type="drink">coffee</objectName> or <objectName type="equipment">cooking utensils</objectName>, all we had to eat was in our <objectName type="equipment">haversacks</objectName>. <persName key="Jesse Reno" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper086">Reno</persName> had ordered up <objectName type="drink">whiskey</objectName>. I told him that we had been ordered to remain. He started back with us. We came to <placeName>a crossroad</placeName>, which he said was the road they went, but the officer in charge was perverse & went straight on - we followed him & <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver</persName> left us. Up to the right was a house where <persName type="real" cert="high" key="C. Jennings Wise" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper017">Capt C. Jennings Wise</persName> lay mortally wounded with five wounds. A gentleman had picked up his <objectName type="equipment">gum blanket</objectName> at <placeName>the battle field</placeName> & I saw his name on it. The road was strewed with <objectName type="equipment">knapsacks</objectName> and other things thrown away. I met <persName key="John Foster" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper055">Gen. Foster</persName> on <objectName type="vehicle">horseback</objectName> - “Well,” says he, “boys, we have gained a great victory - they have just surrendered to me two or three thousand, and the island is ours.” We threw up our <objectName type="clothing">caps</objectName> and yelled. We came to <placeName>a field</placeName>. An old man and a young man, Islanders, half-drunk, were explaining to us how they had been loyal all the time. Then we travelled on - everyone we met told us it was a couple of miles. We were dreadfully tired. We let <orgName>the grog gang</orgName> go, anxious to get some <objectName type="equipment">quarters</objectName> as it was growing dark. Lost our road several times - at last, after dark, arrived in what seemed a <placeName>little town</placeName>, but was the enemy’s barracks. I stumbled into <persName type="Colonel">Col Upton</persName>, Mass., on the 25th and asked permission to sleep on the floor. I pulled off my <objectName type="clothing">boots</objectName>. There was an inch of water in them, & we had travelled 7 or 8 miles since we left the battle ground, & I was rather sore. It was a grateful thing to lie on <placeName>the cabin floor</placeName>. <persName type="real" cert="high" key="Lord John Russell" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper060">Col Russel</persName> of the 10th Conn was killed in the battle from a concussion, it is supposed to be from a passing <objectName type="equipment">cannonball</objectName>, as there was no mark on him. One near him said he just doubled himself together and fell dead. We passed him on our way to the battlefield. One of his men, carrying him, cried to us to give it to them; they had killed his <persName cert="medium" key="Adam Henry" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper010">Col. Capt Henry</persName> was killed too.
