The <name type="Weather">waves were white-capped</name>, and the number of <objectName>sea-gulls</objectName> attracted by the floating waifs of food, together with the lowering sky, made it <name type="Weather">a beautiful storm scene</name>.We are all still crowded on board — something over a thousand souls. <placeName>The ship</placeName> is badly ventilated, dirty, hardly standing room, and it stinks like a <placeName>pig-pen</placeName>. It makes me more and more uneasy every day.<orgName>A schooner</orgName> came alongside with <objectName>water</objectName> this evening. If the <orgName>Scout</orgName> would make his appearance.I had a long <objectName>letter</objectName> with <persName>[Cleat?]</persName>, the <orgName>Tribune</orgName> reporter. The substance of the information is that there are but <persName>two regular officers</persName>, outside the <persName>three generals</persName>, among all the staff. Most of them are club men of <placeName>New York</placeName> — wealthy men, civilians — who don’t understand anything of <objectName>military detail</objectName>, are not accustomed to any self-reliant exertion, and this accounts for the inefficient management, or rather execution, of things.Besides that, the <objectName>tugs</objectName> did not arrive until today. We are to go to <placeName>Roanoke</placeName>. The battle will be fought principally by <objectName>gunboats</objectName>. We are to be landed, the <orgName>expedition</orgName> reorganized, and <objectName>boats</objectName> reassigned.The <orgName>New Brunswick</orgName> makes her appearance across the swash, and the arrival of the <objectName>tugs</objectName> gives us new hope of sailing soon.
