the long swell of the water, remaining effect of <name type="Weather">the late storm</name> - the waves danced gaily in <name type="Weather">the bright sunshine</name> - <objectName>the wild geese and ducks</objectName> sailed about in droves and the <objectName>sea gulls</objectName> gathered like snow flakes over the dark green water. In the <name type="Weather">fresh morning breeze</name> came the <persName>Admiral</persName> over the sea - wash - Two of <orgName>[Ward's?] 62</orgName> [?] [?] were brought from the <placeName>wreck of the gun boat Zouave</placeName> and put on the [fore-part?] of <placeName>our boat</placeName>. After dinner, <persName>Mr [Glott?]</persName>, <persName>Rodamel</persName>, <persName><persName key="George Shorkley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002" cert="high" type="real">Shorkley</persName></persName> & I got into the <placeName>first cutter</placeName> and sailed over to the <placeName>[Sutlers?] Schooner</placeName> - <name type="Weather">the air was fresh enough to be bracing</name> - the water rough enough to give a bounding, exhilerating motion to <placeName>the boat</placeName>. We went down along <placeName>the channel</placeName>, among <objectName>the vessels so familiar to us</objectName>, past the <placeName>wrecked Zouave</placeName>, under the bow of the <placeName>Scout</placeName> - I thought I had made her out among <objectName>the vessels</objectName> over in the <placeName>sound</placeName> - out into the farthest pockets, <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary29.jpg"/> <fw>Sunday Jan 26. continued</fw></p><p>as the deep places of the harbor are called - the harbor is full of shoals and deep places - the deep places are called pockets - It was near sunset when we left the <placeName>Sutlers' boat</placeName> - we saw the <objectName>Northerner</objectName> gaily steaming into the sound, cheered, as she passed, by those already there. It really makes one feel good to see the difficulties at last overcome - there are now 12 or 13 transports across - but the sun sank, as we [?] under a light wind, back - leaving a horizon of orange and gold - gloriously resplendent. We got back to the <placeName>Cossack</placeName> in time for tea - refreshed very considerably by our trip. There is a brother of the [shoals?] gets the night-mare, almost every night, yells horribly and wakens up every one in the saloon. <persName>Markley</persName> remarked quietly that he wished he would ride that mare in the [daytime?] We call tomorrow - I read a paper this evening - the <orgName>Baltimore American</orgName> of Jan 23. It says "all that has been heard from the Burnside expedition was a despatch from [?] <placeName>Goldsboro</placeName> that the town was full of people flying from <placeName>Newbern</placeName>: also something taken from <objectName>one of the southern papers</objectName> - that one hundred of <orgName subtype="Union">Burnside's fleet</orgName> were seen on <placeName>Pamlico sound</placeName>--that probably they would attack simultaneously <placeName>Roanoke Island</placeName> and <placeName>Newbern</placeName> - that they were prepared for them in both places I think there are some <objectName>thirty ships</objectName>, <objectName>transports</objectName> and <objectName>gun boats</objectName> now in the sound the balance are out in the inlet yet.
