One of Co D. <persName key="James Conoway" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper046" cert="high" type="real">James Conoway</persName> died last night of consumption. They lowered him into the <objectName type="vehicle">surf boat</objectName>, the band playing the dead march, and took him over to bury him on the lonely <objectName type="nature">sand beach</objectName>. The Col, Chaplain & Dr went along, but owing to the <name type="weather">wind</name> and tide they have not been able to return. The Cap was out in a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName>, and had to be towed back by a <objectName type="vehicle">steam tug</objectName>. This is a dreadful <name type="weather">stormy</name> place. We loitered on deck <time>this morning</time>, the only thing of interest, to watch our carpenters repairing our breaches, and the tide heaving out <objectName type="equipment">barrels</objectName>, & <objectName type="equipment">beds</objectName> & pieces of the wreck which it brought in last night. <persName role="Doctor" key="James Gibson" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper047">Dr Gibson Chaplain</persName> of the 45th & young <persName subtype="Gregg">Gregg</persName> came on board, & would not get off on account of the <name type="weather">storm</name>. They came from <placeName role="City" subtype="Baltimore" cert="high" key="Baltimore" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl003">Baltimore<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName> on a <objectName type="vehicle">schooner</objectName>, which turned in on account of the <name type="weather">storm</name>, on their way to join the 45th at <placeName role="Port" subtype="Royal" key="Port Royal" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl072">Port Royal.</placeName> I amused myself reading the <objectName type="readable">army regulations</objectName> and the <title level="m">Mill on the Floss</title>. Lots of light reading has turned up from somewhere, and as we can't drill, nor go ashore, we are pinned down to it. Rations are severe. We had <objectName type="food">fried pork</objectName> <objectName type="food">boiled potatoes</objectName> <objectName type="food">hard bread</objectName> & <objectName type="drink">coffee</objectName> for breakfast, <objectName type="food">boiled potatoes</objectName> and <objectName type="food">soup</objectName> for dinner - <objectName type="food">fried pork</objectName>, <objectName type="food">boiled rice</objectName> and <objectName type="drink">tea</objectName> for suppr. Those that are fond of <objectName type="food">molasses</objectName> relish it probably best - but it comes quite natural to me. We have settled in our own minds that we are going up to the <placeName role="Island" cert="high" key="Roanoke Island" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl076">Roanoke Island<precision match="@ref" precision="high"/></placeName>.
