<time>this morning</time>. We could just see the <objectName type="Vehicle">"City of New York"</objectName> laying out in the breakers. A <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> came in to our ship with five men - they had swamped two <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName> before they succeeded in getting off. The Captain lowered one of his <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName>, and he, the Mate, the Col and & <persName role="Doctor" subtype="Hossack">Dr Hossack</persName>started out. They arrived just in time to see a little <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> belonging to a <objectName type="vehicle">Schooner</objectName> take off the remaining crew. Both <objectName type="vehicle">boats</objectName> came up to see us at the same time and <persName role="Captain" subtype="Bennet">Captain Bennet</persName> called to us to cheer the little white <objectName type="vehicle">boat,</objectName> that had rescued the crew, which we did with a hearty good will. The capt and mate went away again and shortly after, the <objectName type="vehicle">Brig</objectName> "Hope" swung against us, pushed in our wheel house, and kept digging at us until it had all the out side works on the starboard side at the stern crushed - opened out our cabin knocking to pieces <persName role="Captain" subtype="Bell" cert="high" key="Thomas Bell" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper072" type="real">Capt Bell's</persName> berth. Mine just escaped. While this was going on we saw <persName role="Captain" subtype="Bennett">Capt Bennet</persName> returning: I was standing at the side as the Captain came up. His <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> shot past the place for getting on. He scolded his crew remarking with a forcible ejaculation that he "wouldn't give a handful of cow-dung for the whole of them" We got up steam, and the Brig was towed away, leaving our stern pretty well smashed on one side. <objectName type="vehicle">The City of New York"</objectName> was loaded with 70 cases <objectName type="equipment">muskets</objectName> and <objectName type="equipment">rifles</objectName>, <objectName type="equipment">ammunition</objectName>, <objectName type="equipment">hay</objectName>, <objectName type="equipment">shot and shell</objectName>, and a great deal of Officers <objectName type="equipment">baggage</objectName>. She is lying on her side one side stoved in - the poor fellows were on there for two days, and were clinging to her side when taken off. They had no sleep for two days, and were 15 & 1/2 feet, and why she should attempt to cross with such a sea is owing to the government pilot. In calm sea she might have made it as the channel is 17 feet. The sailors were pretty well whiskeyed when we came on board. The Captain's name was <persName role="Captain" subtype="Nye">Nye</persName> and the sailors spoke highly of him. The Quarter master, <persName role="Soldier" subtype="Shorkley" cert="high" key="George Shorkley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper002" type="real">Shorkley,</persName> <persName role="Soldier" subtype="Beaver" key="Jacob G. There was a <objectName type="equipment">steam engine</objectName> making <objectName type="drink">fresh water</objectName>, and a ten inch <objectName type="equipment">gun</objectName> outside. Three or four wrecked <objectName type="vehicle">schooners</objectName>, <objectName type="equipment">masts</objectName> and remains of many other wrecks on the shore. We had a gay time getting our <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> off the beach - as the surf rolled heavily. <time>This morning</time> as we were standing on deck, we saw a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> run to shore, and they buried some poor sailor on the lonely beach. There will be nothing to mark his grave - the waves will soon smooth down the little <objectName type="nature">hillock of sand</objectName> - He'll always have <name type="weather">storms</name> and <name type="weather">winds</name> and dashing waves over him.
