Description

Gandhi with the Passive Resisters Football Club in Johannesburg, 1913. Gandhi founded football (soccer) clubs in Durban, Pretoria, and Johannesburg, naming them the Passive Resisters Football Club. In this photo Gandhi stands with the Johannesburg team (Gandhi is in the back row, the sixth figure from the left). Tolstoy Farm was a venue for football matches. Gandhi would give political speeches to the spectators during half-time and distribute pamphlets to them. Proceeds from such matches were used to raise funds for the families whose breadwinners were imprisoned for nonviolent civil disobedience and for Tolstoy Farm.
