How I wish for the old days when we could jump into the car and run up to Mifflinburg or down to Winfield before going to bed -- just for the ride. </p> <p> The candy has not yet arrived, but I suppose it will be along tomorrow or Tuesday. I'm sure the Lt. will enjoy it. </p> <p> Now don’t worry about Wes and his family. He's making more money than he's ever made in his life and can well afford a wife and child. And as far as going overseas is concerned -- a mess sergeant, seldom dies of anything but eating his own cooking! </p> <p> I'm real proud of my distinguished parents. Dad will make an excellent trustee for the church, and if you aren't good enough for deaconess, Mother, then no one is. </p> <p> I had letters from Ken and Charlie Bond this week. Ken was attending the Executive sessions in Chicago which are substituting for the Northern Baptist Convention this year. He's really getting in with Baptist bigwigs. I think he'll go far. He's working in a congested defense area for the summer. Charlie is not sure where he'll be next year, but I don't think he's going back to Kingston. </p> <p> Well, I was pretty much off the beam when I wrote you about the Officers Club. I went over for lunch with two of the Majors in the Dept. the other day, and its not at all bad. True they do have a bar and serve beer -- but that's all -- and there isn’t anyplace around here that doesn't. They have a very fine dining room and serve by far the nicest meal I've had here yet. Wells and I had dinner there Thursday evening. Then too they have tennis courts and a very fine pool, which I fully intend to take advantage of later on. Besides that they have dances twice a week. It may be well worth the $2 a month. At least I'm going to give it a try before condemning it further. </p> <p> Paul Everhart was in Materiel this week and very near didn't get through. I was so scared he wouldn't. I'm afraid he'll have trouble in Gunnery -- for he's sure to at least be set back a few weeks. Of course, don't repeat this. I thank goodness he wasn't in my section. Dean had him. My section all passed -- for which I'm always grateful. </p> <p> I had loading (aircraft) demonstration yesterday afternoon and spent the rest of the day loafing and reading. This morning I went to church and then went in town for dinner and took in “The Human Comedy”. If it hasn't been to Lbg. yet, be sure to see it. </p> <p> Dad, did you renew my AAA membership. I think it expired Jan 1st and I didn’t get a new card or bond. If you don't think it worth keeping up, why we'll forget it. But I think the bond is worth while -- and if you'll tell me how much the dues are, I'll send you a check. </p> <p> I spoke with Col. Watson Thursday. We were on the same bus going over to the main post. He seems very nice, and after the event, I shall go and call. </p> <closer> <salute>Yours, with love,</salute><lb/> <signed>John</signed> </closer> </div> </body> </text> </TEI>
