<persName type="regiment">We</persName> took down our <objectName type="equipment">tents</objectName> & packed, “waiting for the <objectName type="equipment"> wagon</objectName>” when about 9 o’clock the <persName type="Military">wagon master</persName> came, and told <persName type="regiment">us</persName> he had <objectName type="readable">orders</objectName> from <persName on the other side of the <placeName>river</placeName>. If my <objectName type="equipment">tents</objectName> hadn’t been down I wouldn’t have budged - <persName type="regiment"> we</persName> asked "what then - is there a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName>”, well <persName type="Hall">his</persName> instructions didn’t go any further. Our <persName type="Union"> Quartermaster</persName> starts off with the<persName type="Union"> wagon-master</persName> to see about a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName>. Directly the teams came, & <persName type="regiment">we</persName> of course thought there was a <objectName type="vehicle">boat</objectName> - loaded up - <persName role="Military" type="Beaver"> Beaver</persName> went with the teams - <persName type="JML">I</persName> started with the company by the road. Within a mile or perhaps less, a <objectName type="nature">deep creek</objectName> <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary73.jpg"/> joins the <orgName role="Military" type="Trent">Trent</orgName>, then runs along it up, with perhaps <objectName type="nature">500 yards of land</objectName> between, covered with <objectName type="nature">grass</objectName> like <placeName type="Timothy">Timothy</placeName>, then makes a bend like a <objectName type="nature">horseshoe</objectName> & comes back again – across the <objectName type="nature">neck</objectName> it is but a few hundred yards, but the <placeName role="Union" type="Peninsula">peninsula</placeName> contains several hundred <objectName type="nature">acres</objectName> – on the <placeName>peninsula</placeName> is our <placeName role="Union" type="Camp">camp</placeName>: <objectName type="nature">covered with grass & shaded with pines</objectName> - the <placeName>banks</placeName> covered with <objectName type="nature">luxuriant foliage of pines and trees & flowers</objectName> </p> <figure> <ab>[drawing of camp on river]</ab> </figure> <p>The <objectName type="nature">stately cypress</objectName>, made venerable by the <orgName type="spanish">gray-beards of Spanish moss</orgName> – The <placeName> creek</placeName> is very deep. Oh it is a lovely place. But <persName type="regiment">we</persName> waited long and wearily. The others have their <objectName type="equipment">tents</objectName> pitched, and our prospect seemed to be to roost on the <objectName type="nature">trees</objectName> or spread on the <objectName type="nature">grass</objectName>. Just at dusk and we saw a<objectName type="vehicle"> big <pb/> flat</objectName> come floating up. Polled with long <objectName type="equipment">poles</objectName> – <persName type="regiment">we</persName> had a great time unloading – everybody cross – sharpers looking out for <objectName type="equipment">boards</objectName> - men quarreling over their piles – for <placeName role="luxuries" type="camp"> boards</placeName> are considered the luxuries of the <placeName>camp</placeName>. The <objectName type="equipment">tents</objectName> were hastily pitched in the dark, & we all took a good sleep. </p> </div> </body> </text> </TEI>
