            <dateline>Tuesday 27.</dateline>
            <p>This was a warm day with pleasant air stirring. The Jersey Blue arrived last
               night from <placeName>Hatteras </placeName>with mails and <persName>Gov. Stanley. </persName>The <persName>Cossack</persName> came from
<placeName> Washington N.C.</placeName> with about 400 released prisoners. They are from all the
               states, some 54 Pennsylvanians. 2 were here, who had been captured about the
               1st of July near <placeName>Martinsburg.</placeName> They had been taken to <placeName>Richmond,</placeName> and during the
               winter were one in <placeName>New Orleans</placeName> and the other in <placeName>Tuscaloosa</placeName>. In <placeName>New Orleans </placeName>they
               were closely imprisoned from Parish prison - 4 mo. &amp; 2 days had seen no
               ground. In <placeName>Tuscaloosa </placeName>they had it easier. They were then taken to <placeName>Salisbury, N.C.</placeName> where there are several thousand. They said they saw <persName>Col. Corcoran</persName> there.
               None of the officers were exchanged. They were all to be sent to <placeName>Washington N.C.</placeName> <persName>Capt. Pollack </persName>whom I met the other day, received a commission as second
               Lt. in his company. But as he was only a corp. &amp; promoted over the head of
               the orderly, it appears the Lt. Col. has kept the commission and refused to
               give it to him. We had one of the most furious rains last night we ever had.
               Everything was flooded. </p>
