One felt like lying out on the sunny side of the decks & enjoying the [dolce far niente?] - the <objectName>air</objectName> was so pure - but they told me the <objectName>barometer</objectName> was sinking, & I have pains in my <objectName>bones</objectName> this evening. I was out on deck until ten o'clock just lazily enjoying myself. Then I looked over [<objectName>Lossings?] pictorial history of the U.S.</objectName> I think that is a most admirable <objectName>book</objectName>. About twelve <objectName>a suspicious sail</objectName> was in sight and a <orgName>gun boat</orgName> started in pursuit. We watched them as they sped away, until both faded from sight and the reach of <objectName>our glasses</objectName>. The <orgName>gun boat</orgName> returned toward sunset, but I have not learned the result. I only saw that she had nothing in tow. A <orgName>coal schooner</orgName> came along side, and they commenced putting on <objectName>coal</objectName>. The <orgName>Pawtuxent</orgName> came up with the <orgName>four companies</orgName> from the <orgName>Scout</orgName>, and crowded them on <objectName>our boat</objectName>. I understand that the <orgName>Scout</orgName> is to be brought across in the morning - she and <orgName>the Rue</orgName> - which has <objectName>our camp equipage</objectName> on board and to be taken in tow by our ship. I was on board the <orgName>coal schooner</orgName> - one of the [<persName>mates</persName>] told me that along <placeName>the Southern shore</placeName> there are a great <objectName>many dead bodies</objectName> [in bodies?] washed out: lying along the <placeName>Beach</placeName>. Supposed to be those that were killed when <placeName>Hateras</placeName> was taken, buried at low tide and since washed out. He said he had heard that there were 240 killed. About sunset the <orgName>Spaulding</orgName> came across the swash - [cheered?] <objectName>every ship load</objectName> - the band of the <orgName>24th Mass</orgName> playing hail to the chief, and Dixie. We gave her a cheer as she let go <objectName>her anchor</objectName> among us. This was <objectName>the ship</objectName> that ran regular trips between <placeName>Fortress Monroe</placeName>, <placeName>Hateras</placeName>, <placeName>Port Royal</placeName>. She is a very fine <objectName>steamer</objectName>. <persName>GenBurnside</persName> took her, made her his <objectName>headquarters</objectName>, substituted another <objectName>steamer</objectName>, I think the <orgName>Eastern State</orgName>. It was said that when she came across the swash, <orgName>the expedition</orgName> would sail. I got a "World" of the <orgName>22nd</orgName> from the <orgName>Sutters Schooner</orgName>. There were some conjectures about our <orgName>Expedition</orgName>. <placeName>Roanoke</placeName>, <placeName>Washington</placeName> and <placeName>New Berne</placeName> were mentioned as <placeName>points of attack</placeName>, and that <persName>50,000 men</persName> had probably been sent from the <orgName>army of the Potomac</orgName> to strengthen these <placeName>points</placeName>. Clearly <placeName>North Carolina</placeName> will be the <placeName>theatre of war</placeName> very soon. To take <placeName>Roanoke</placeName>, occupy <placeName>New Bern</placeName>, and hold it as a point at [?] to make way for <orgName>an army</orgName> to to go <placeName>goldsboro</placeName> - <orgName>The army of the Potomac</orgName> must then retrograde & when that is done their cause is done. <persName>Tom Grier</persName> and <persName>Harry House</persName> came on board this afternoon: both looking fat and hearty. They were both very sea-sick - <persName>Tom</persName>, as expected, made friends with every one, and has a <objectName>button</objectName> from each <orgName>State Regiment</orgName> sewed on his <objectName>overcoat</objectName>.</p> </div> </body> </text> </TEI>
