Feb. 14,1943 Dear Mother + Dad --
Another week past, now only 4 ½ more. This last one wasn't so bad. I didn't get any more U's. I didn't get a chance, for I wasn't called on to fire any problems. However, we have a service practice tomorrow morning and I'm sure to be called on.
Imagine my surprise the other night to run into Herb Wilkinson -- Demie '42 - on the street. He's in class 60. He didn't know I was here either. I haven't had a chance to chat with him since, but I plan to look him up tonight.
I took your hint, Mother; I've been on the lookant for Princeton ROTC. So when civilians began appearing in mess formation I hopped down to the reception area and had a look at the roster. Sure enough, there was the name "Henderson, Joseph W. -- hut orderly." I bet his mother would appreciate that.
Anyway I went right down and looked him up He's much the same fellow- basn't charged much except in height in the eight years since I last saw him. He reminds me so very much of his mother - same mannerisms same way of talking. We spent the afternoon together umlking over old times and discussing O.C.5. He is in class 64.
This morning we went over for classification Cridently the process ofcheny men for assignments is under way. This week we had a chance to sign up for specialists schools. I signed for survey - but a don't imagine I have even a faint chance of getting it.
Thank you so much for the Valentine box. The oranges & tangerines were well squashed- as was the tin box (so you won't want it back), but the cookies and everything else was in good shape.
I had a valentine from hunt Lillian enclosing a $5 bill & one from Alice containing a dollar.
Guess there won't be a good this month because bill & one from Alice containing a dollars. I was paid my full Jan. pay. 59.40 (6.60 inaurance taken out.
Don't remember whether I told you I received the box containing the Young gift or not. I gave it to him & his wife is down this week end, so he'll pass it on. He appreciated it a great deal.
I had a letter from Janet Bold. She is working for the Presbyterian board in Philly. Don expects a leave shortly and will not be commissioned until August. I guess they plan to be married them. in Okla. too. He's in Tishomingo. Also had a note from Ben Kauffman. Ben is
in Okla. too. He's in Tishomingo. We're beginning to worry over transportation home. I haven't heard a single thing from the air lines. I'm beginning to think it will have to be by rail. I suppose the best bet is to go north to St. Louis and then take the PRR east. You can probably expect to see me sometime Saturday the 20th.
I'm still quite up in the air as to what to do about uniform. I still think the best bet is to pick up most of it in Philly -- but I hate to spend the time going down to the city by train after coming half way across the continent.
