James Merrill Linn Diary: 1861-1862

We discovered today that we misunderstood the order; that it was that Commander of Regiments should hold themselves in readiness to march on twelve hours notice. So we spent the day as usual in drill. On Saturday, the Regiment received new coats - & now look like soldiers, and make a fine appearance. Frank Beale returned from Washington, and bid us goodbye. I sent my gold watch home with him, and bought his silverwatch: paid him in full for it - $20. Tom Grier has been detailed as clerk to the Assistant Adjutant Reno.
