It commenced <name type="weather">raining </name>about ten o'clock and it was very pleasant to hear it patter on the tent cover. The Adjt was to town and brought us the news that <placeName key="New Orleans" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl060">New Orleans </placeName>was taken and that there was a big connonading at <placeName key="Island Number Ten" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl115">Island No 10</placeName>. & that our fleet had to withdraw from want of <objectName type="equipment">ammunition</objectName>. We had to make new pay rolls to day again. We expect pay pretty soon. <persName key="John Hartranft" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper056">Col. Hartranft</persName>, received news yesterday of the death of one of his children, and serious illness of others, received a furlough for 20 days & sailed in <objectName type="ship">the New York</objectName>. We got some yeast powder & <persName key="Dick Langley" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper103">Dick </persName>baked us some elegant <objectName type="food">raised bread</objectName> for supper. It was a real luxury to have it. <persName key="G. H.
