Description
Gandhi asked Gopal Krishna Gokhale, a leading politician in the Indian National Congress and Gandhi’s political mentor in India, to visit South Africa. Gokhale agreed, and arrived in Cape Town on October 22, 1912. Gandhi accompanied Gokhale as he toured South Africa, meeting with white South Africans and Indians alike in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and other cities to assess the Indian situation. Gokhale also visited Tolstoy Farm, and Gandhi records that in spite of Gokhale’s delicate health, he was good-natured about living like a prisoner during his stay, including eating their simple meals and sleeping on a floor mat. Gokhale is pictured seated in the front row fourth from right; Gandhi is fifth from right.
