            <dateline><date><date when="1862-03-27">Thursday 27</date></date>.</dateline>
            <p>Still suffering from my cold. Discovered the cause. I have been accustomed to
               wearing<objectName type="clothing"> top boots</objectName> &amp; heavy <objectName type="clothing">sky blue pant</objectName>s. Very foolishly on Saturday after
               our return I put on <objectName type="clothing">cloth pants</objectName>, and <objectName type="clothing">shoes</objectName>, &amp; have been wearing them since,
               though it has been considerably colder. Never thought of it, until this morning
               &amp; have reverted to my top boots again. This afternoon <persName key="Jacob G. Beaver" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper003">Beaver </persName>&amp; I took a
               stroll down to <placeName key="Fort Ellis" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl025">Ft Ellis </placeName>[8 Dupre?]. This fort here is <placeName key="Fort Lane" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl028">Ft Lane</placeName>, five <objectName type="equipment">guns</objectName>. The
               next below is <placeName key="Fort Ellis" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl025">Fort Ellis</placeName> of nine guns - built of sand shows a terrific
               explosion. The field all around is full of <objectName type="equipment">shell </objectName>&amp; <objectName type="equipment">canister</objectName>, scattered all
               around - pieces of the magazine hinges of the door - broken arches lying all
               around. Below this is <placeName key="Fort Dixie" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl114">Dixie</placeName>. Its construction is peculiar. A heavy frame of
               <objectName type="nature">logs</objectName>, floored, covered and sided with <objectName type="equipment">planks </objectName>- two rooms thus made for two
               rifled guns. Outside frames of [?] are made about the 
               <pb facs="https://leaf.bucknell.edu/sites/default/files/2026-01/diary52.jpg"/> size of
               <objectName type="equipment">barrels </objectName>and filled with sand, connected by bundles of withes 20-30 feet long.
               These are built all around and over them making them bomb proof. We could see
               that the withes were tied with ropes taken from the sunken schooners - where they
               were cut off the sails. Below This are frames where they made these bundles.
               One of these <objectName type="equipment">guns </objectName>was dismounted and spiked. There was preparation for building
               another of a similar kind near it. They named that saucy thing very properly
               Dixie. The next one below of 13 <objectName type="equipment">guns </objectName>is called <placeName key="Fort Thompson" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl113">Ft Thompson</placeName>. We got back in time
               for dress parade. We pulled for some moss that grows on the trees here. It was
               the first thing I noticed when I landed at <placeName key="Slocum Creek" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_gazetteer.xml#linnpl079">Slocum creek</placeName>. It is of grayish color
               and looks like the beard of an old man tied fast to limb. It has that
               peculiarity that it don't creep along the limb, but hangs in a bunch as if tied
               to it. We had an elegant supper of <objectName type="food">fritters, bread, omelette, ham, fried potatoes</objectName> &amp;c. We move our camp up near <placeName>Gen Reno's</placeName> headquarters tomorrow. We
               have now two cases of varioloid in our company <persName key="John Hartz" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper146">Hartz</persName> and <persName key="James Dougherty" ref="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/BucknellDSC/jmlinn/refs/heads/main/jmlinn_personography.xml#jmlper147">Dougherty</persName> - <persName key="Capt.
