               <p>On ne sait pour quelle cause, un homme de la race rouge, un Galibis, traversait
                  par un beau dimanche une bourgade de <placeName key="France" ref="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q142">France</placeName>.</p>
               <p>Il était d'une de ces lointaines et rares tribus*<note type="annotation">Tribu.
                     Petit peuple ; réunion de familles sauvages.</note> de
                     l'<placeName key="Americas" ref="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q828">Amérique</placeName> qui ne connaissent encore, pour étancher leur
                  soif, que l'<objectName>ea<objectName/>u</objectName> du ciel et des <objectName>sources</objectName>.</p>
               <p>— Qu'est-ce donc, demanda-t-il, que ces maisons sur lesquelles je vois d'agréables
                  devises et de plaisants tableaux ? </p>

               <p>— Ce sont, lui répondit-on, les <objectName>cabarets</objectName> où l'on s'assemble pour boire.</p>
               <p>En ce moment les <objectName>cabarets</objectName> étaient bondés ; on y buvait, criait à tue-tête.</p>
               <p>— Mais, reprit le Galibis, quelle est donc la cause de la grande soif de ce pays ?
                  Il n'y fait pourtant pas si chaud.</p>
               <p>On lui apprit qu'en ce pays-là l'usage était de boire sans soif, des <objectName>liqueurs</objectName> de
                  toute sorte et qui coûtaient cher.</p>
               <p>— Et aux frais de qui boit-on ainsi sans soif, s'il vous plait ?</p>
               <p>— Mais aux frais des <roleName>buveurs</roleName>, qui y dépensent gros.</p>
               <p>— Vous auriez dû m'avertir tout de suite, dit le sauvage, que je suis ici en pays
                  de millionnaires ne sachant que faire de leur argent. Si je n'aimais ma tribu, je
                  m'établirais volontiers dans votre riche village.</p>
               <p>Vinrent à passer des loqueteux*<note type="annotation">Loqueteux. Gens pauvrement
                     vêtus.</note>, et des enfants aux joues creuses n'ayant contre le froid que de
                  pauvres haillons. Ils mendiaient.</p>
               <p>— Ah ! reprit le Galibis, ceux-ci viennent probablement de loin, d'une contrée
                  misérable.</p>
               <p>On lui dit que c'étaient les vieux parents, les femmes, les enfants des <roleName>buveurs</roleName>
                  qu'il voyait là rassemblés, et que ces <roleName>buveurs</roleName>, au lieu de millions, n'avaient que
                  leur travail pour vivre. Leur maigre salaire, la pièce de monnaie lentement,
