Description
Mirabehn helping Gandhi repair his spinning wheel. To emphasize economic self-sufficiency (swadeshi) and village handicrafts, all residents of Sevagram Ashram were expected to spin for at least one hour each day. They also taught spinning to the local villagers, and agreed to wear only handwoven cotton clothing (khadi). This is a type of portable spinning wheel known as a box charkha.
