Description

This photograph documents the wedding of Dakshayani, a Hindu Dalit (Pulayar caste) woman, and Velayudhan, a Christian Dalit (Ezhava caste) man. Gandhi and Kasturba (seated to the right of the couple) serve as the witnesses of their mixed-caste interfaith wedding, which was held at Sevagram Ashram in 1940. At this stage in his life Gandhi began to advocate for intercaste marriage as part of the broader effort to abolish untouchability. Seated in the second row (behind Gandhi and Kasturba) are coresidents Mahadev Desai and Pyarelal Nayar. Coresident Parchure Shastri served as the officiant.
