Another week in the army is past -- and the army is past -- and
what a week! Monday at 5:00 P.M. I began a
24. hr. guard duty and it rained continuously
for the whole period. I walked two hours and
was off four -- actually being out in the
weather 8 hours. I was gun park guard -- carrying
a loaded rifle -- but I would have been scared
to use it even if I would have had an
occasion too.

It rained Wednesday & Thursday too,
but Friday it cleared up so I got put on
coal detail. If I had known I was going
to spend a whole day doing nothing but
shoveling coal, I wouldn't have been so
lax in keeping a few small buckets full
at home, I bet I shoveled 8 tons all
by myself. I got a few blisters, but outside of that there were few difficuties.

I had a letter from home in which
Mother said she + Dad were coming down in
a few weeks. I hope they can make it, for
I would like them to see what army life
is like. It's hard to describe it accurately.

I slept late this morning (Sunday),
and just got up. I thought I could dash
off this note before church. But I missed
breakfast and I'm not sure I can wait til
dinner time. I guess I'd better close now
and run over to the Service Club for a
bite to eat before services.
